Redbridge 2 – 1 Clapton FC
Redbridge booked themselves a spot in the quarter-finals of the London Senior Cup last night (Tuesday) after beating Essex Senior League outfit Clapton.
The match at Oakside went ahead despite freezing cold conditions with Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton doing a fantastic job to get the clash on.
Jay Knight and Timi Dorgu were on target for the Ryman North outfit as they held off a late fightback from the Tons to reach the last eight.
Clapton came into the clash full of confidence after beating Wadham Lodge 2-0 at the weekend while Motormen had tasted defeat at Great Wakering Rovers.
But it was the hosts who took the lead midway through the first period when Knight managed to beat Yakup Seyer.
It remained 1-0 at the break and Harry Prince was introduced by Redbridge during the interval for Harrison Tweddell.
Five minutes into the second period and the Motormen doubled their advantage when captain Dorgu found the net after poor marking by the visitors.
Michael Walther’s Clapton managed to reduce the arrears late on, but couldn’t force an equaliser and bowed out of the competition.
Tons assistant manager Andre Thomas said: “Unlucky result in difficult conditions. It felt more like a European away game in Russia than a London Senior Cup match!”
Redbridge’s win, their first since December 8 when they beat East Thurrock, was in front of a big crowd of 151.
Next up for them in this competition is an away match at Ryman Premier side Wingate & Finchley in the next round.
This weekend the Motormen will host Ryman North leaders AFC Sudbury while Clapton are without a league fixture.
