Game Report

Clapton FC 2 – 0 Tower Hamlets

The Tons defeated local rivals Tower Hamlets 2-0 on Saturday in the Essex Senior League in front of 497 supporters.

And that moved them onto 56 points, only four behind the target they set at the start of the campaign – 60.

More success this evening at Coles Park would see Clapton edge closer to their aim and Thomas is keen for them to get another victory.

He said: “Greenhouse will be a game that can help us get closer towards our season target. We have a chance to go one point behind our aim.

“That will be in our minds. We won’t take anything for granted, but will be confident because of our record in local derbies.”

Goals from Tony Cookey and James Briggs gave Tons a relatively comfortable 2-0 success at the Old Spotted Dog on Saturday.

Forward Cookey struck just before the break while substitute Briggs netted a trademark free kick late on.

Clapton faced a goalkeeper in fine form, however, and could only really relax once they managed to get a second.

Thomas revealed how his advice helped Briggs find the net, but he was quick to praise the substitute’s quality rather than boast about his own role in the goal.

“Their goalkeeper was in inspired form, he made save after save, some he had no right to make but one in particular made me think there’s something we can do to beat him,” added Tons number two.

“I was speaking to the boys on the bench about it and every save he made mocked my theory. James didn’t believe it could happen the way I suggested.

“He said if he scores using my suggestion he’ll take a selfie with me. He scored, he used the suggestion but in all honesty it was all down to him.

“James is good enough to execute the plan and a smart enough player to know what to do at the right times – hopefully we’ll take a selfie on the cup final day.”

9th division definitely louder than premier league #claptonfc #claptonultras #brigataitaliana
