Takeley finished off their season in style with a 4-1 hammering of a much changed Clapton at Station Road last night.
It started well for the visitors though as they took a 3rd minute lead from a strike on the edge of the box. Both sides then went close from close range as the game started on the front foot.
As mentioned above it was a much changed Clapton side with their Gordon Brasted Final on Saturday in mind and they were to concede an equaliser when a neat one-two from Takeley saw a fine finish from the edge of Clapton’s box. Moments later the hosts almost took the lead when a shot hit the inside of the post.
Takeley were starting to get on top and a good move from the hosts ended with a low drive just past the Clapton far post before another good move from Takeley saw a good run down the right and then a shot across the face of goal before a good ball into Clapton’s box was almost met by the hosts but it just invaded them.
Then just as the half time oranges were being arranged Takeley grabbed the lead with a tap in at the far post, this after Clapton’s keeper had made a couple of good saves so the goal had been coming. The Tons had started brightly but since there early goal the hosts had been on top.
Half Time: Takeley 2 Clapton 1
Takeley continued to be on the front foot and more good play saw them through but the effort from just inside the Clapton box was put over. It was a great chance and they continued to create more chances and only a good save at the near post and a fine defensive block in box denied the hosts going further ahead.
Almost inevitably the hosts did made it 3-1 when a free kick on the right of the box was headed in at he near post to surely mean it was game over. Takeley then somehow failed to make it four when an effort at the back post squirmed almost along the Clapton line and wide but they did make it four courtesy of a great strike from outside the box. The hosts were looking lively every time they go forward as the visitors were offering very little.
It should of been 5-1 as the hosts passed up another opportunity when a ball to the back post saw them with an open goal from two yards out but it was inexplicably blazed over the Clapton goal. Clapton struck a free kick over Takeley’s bar from miles out late on but the early goal they got was as good as it got for the Tons as Takeley ran out easy winners on the night to end their season in 11th. Clapton finish the season 8th and now have two cup finals to get ready for.
