Proudly East London 2018

Community, Football, News

Since 2014, Clapton Ultras have organised a yearly tournament to celebrate diversity and inclusion in football in London, specifically East London.

The first edition of Proudly East London tournament was inspired by a campaign launched in conjunction with the anti-racist campaign group Newham Monitoring Project, following failed attempts by a minuscule fascist group to persuade football authorities to take action against the Clapton Ultras’ “political flags” at football games.

The event grew over the years with the fourth edition taking place on the August bank holiday weekend in Walthamstow, in line with our completely unplanned tradition of holding it in a different East London borough each year.

This edition will also see the collaboration with Clapton Community FC, the Clapton supporters-owned team, which offered the pitches to play on at Wadham Sports Center, who will also play on the Saturday of the three day event.

Teams invited

This year teams include East End Phoenix, Easton Cowgirls, Enfield Town Ultras, FCSP Hyenas, Mount Pleasant Park FC, Pier Pressure, Queerspace, Amed FC, Clapton CFC, Republica FC, Waltham Rabble, Brigata Italiana CU and, of course, Clapton Ultras.

This year’s tournament will see a range of events following what we’ve tried to do in the past editions and it will span over three days, our longest edition so far!

Friday 24th August, 7:30pm – Talk by Phil Vasili “A history of Walter Tull and his legacy”

On Friday night, we will be in the Red House (St. Anthony’s Catholic Club) in Forest Gate to hear more about local football hero Walter Tull who has been one of the first professional black football players in UK and who led Clapton FC campaign to win its second FA Amateur Cup in 1909.

The main speaker of the night will be Phil Vasili, Walter Tull’s biographer and author of the book “Walter Tull, (1888-1918), Officer, Footballer: All the Guns in France Couldn’t Wake Me” who will be joined by other guests.

Saturday 25th August, 3:00pm – Clapton CFC v Wanderers FC

Saturday sees the first chance for Clapton fans to see Clapton CFC on their home turf. Clapton CFC fans and members worked hard in the past weeks to cleanup to make the spectator area as accessible as possible ahead of their season.

Clapton CFC will face Wanderers FC who, having been formed in 1859 before the Football Association was formed, were one of the big names of early football. They won the FA Cup five times in total, including the very first Cup and three in a row, but by 1887 it was all over. The club was reformed in 2009 and now competes in Surrey South Eastern Combination Junior Division One, Step 14.

Sunday 26th August, 12 – 5pm – Proudly East London 2018

The weekend concludes with the 5-a-side tournament on Sunday, again at the Wadham Lodge Sports Center. We’ll have access to three 5-a-side pitches where the teams will play, and the bar will be open until a good while after the tournament.

So save the date and join us for what will be another great Proudly East London tournament!
