On 1st July, police raided a flat in Bremen in northern German to arrest Valetin, an anti-fascist Ultra supporter of SV Werder Bremen accused of taking part in clashes after a home game against rivals Hamburger SV back in April 2015.
Although the police have attempted to portray the confrontation as nothing more than football violence between the two sides, it was in reality overtly political: Werder Bremen anti-fascist fans were defending themselves against an attack by local neo-Nazis.
Since his arrest, Valentin has been held in custody awaiting trial, portrayed by police as the main orchestrator of the violence. He faces charges of aggravated battery and severe breach of the peace (schwerer Landfriedensbruch). Our comrades at Werder Bremen accuse the police of seeking to make him a scapegoat for anti-fascists exercising their right to self-defence.
Having ourselves faced violence from Nazi thugs and a knee-jerk reaction by police that initially tried to pin blame onto us while letting the fascists walk away, we are proud to stand in solidarity with Valentin and with all anti-fascist Ultras at Werder Bremen.
